Pure water literally means clean water. In our understanding, pure water should have a neutral pH of 7.0. Measuring the pH value of pure water is very simple. But in practical applications, measuring the pH value of pure water is challenging. Pure water usually refers to water with a conductivity less than 100 μS/cm. The pH value of ultrapure water is generally between 5.5pH and 7.5pH, which also depends on the carbon dioxide content in the water. In some solutions with low conductivity and low ionic strength, the liquid junction potential of the pH electrode system will be unstable. Since the internal resistance of the glass resistor is very high, the higher the internal resistance, the thicker the glass film, the asymmetric potential will increase, and the electromotive force will be generated more slowly. Pure water is a non-buffering liquid and has completely different properties from the standard buffer solution. Therefore, if an electrode that performs well in the standard buffer solution is suddenly moved to unbuffered pure water, the establishment time of the electrode potential will become slow. In addition, carbon dioxide also affects pure water, which results in inaccurate and non-reproducible pH measurements of pure water.
